Self Hypnosis

For those who want to power of hypnosis to work for them, but do not want to be hypnotized by a stranger, self hypnotism is an excellent option. By putting yourself into a hypnotic state and applying suggestion to yourself, you can realize all the results you want to see from hypnosis, but you do not have to put yourself in the hands of someone whom you may not be entirely comfortable with.

Self hypnotism is an excellent tool for those who want to stay in control of themselves and their hypnotic state. It does not require visiting a trained hypnotist and it allows you to give yourself whatever suggestion you wish to work toward any goal that you desire for yourself. Instead of working with someone who may not understand you or your reasons for your own suggestion, it is quite a relief to know that everything is designed precisely the way you want it.

As well, self hypnotism can be less expensive that visiting a hypnotist. By learning the process from a book or from the Internet, you can have all the tools you need whenever you need them. Instead of paying a hypnotist for every visit, you can self hypnotize yourself at your leisure and it will only cost the one-time fee of a book. Or it could even be free, if you read about the process on-line or through a library book.

For those who are looking for something a little different, self hypnotism tapes are very popular. By walking you through the steps involved in hypnosis and allowing you to enter a much deeper state than you could with other forms of self hypnotism, the results can be more pronounced and more effective. These tapes are easy to find and often relatively inexpensive. Thus, if a lot of reading is not your cup of tea, check out these tapes to see what they can do for you.

Hypnosis is powerful, but not everyone is comfortable being hypnotized by someone else. So if you are fascinated by the power and possibilities of hypnosis, but you want to do it in the privacy of your own home, or while you are alone, self hypnotism can let you do that. Whether you want to effect positive change, such as curing a phobia or quitting smoking, or you simply want to use the incredibly relaxing state of hypnosis just to cope with stress, check out self hypnotism and see what a difference it can make for you.

Hypnosis: Fiction and Facts

It’s that time again. I get a call from a prospective client, or I’m at a party, and someone finds out that I’m a hypnotists. What happens to me, your friendly neighborhood hypnotist? Panic? No. Open up the hypnosis part of brain and start toungue flapping? Yup.

A large part of what goes into a successful session (whether entertaining people at a party or bar, or in a serious consulting room setting), is the client’s understanding of just what is about to happen.

Often people ask me, “will I have to speak Martian or dance like a chicken?” Only if you really want to!

What follows is a part of what I explain to clients, or prosective, party-going chickens about the process of hypnosis. May you enjoy, be informed, and prosper fom the information.

Hypnosis FAQs

What can hypnosis do for me? Almost anything! Well, almost.

The application of hypnosis can range from remedial (changing a habit, eliminating a phobia or anxiety, mind-body healing), to creating and maintaining excellence and peak performance (study skills, business applications, creative abilities, sports performance, peak states for everyday life).

How does it work?

The process is profoundly simple. Hypnosis works on you by allowing you to go into a relaxed state. This allows the body to activate the parasympathetic nervous system, and lessen that activity of the sympathetic nervous system. In a nutshell, you shut down the stress hormones and nervous activity, and thereby open up your bodies natural healing powers. This sense of relaxation also lessens the chatter of the analytical or conscious mind.

How will it affect me?

Your mind and body are in a constant state of dialogue. While relaxing the body and quieting the analytical portion of the mind, the unconscious or subconscious mind (the creative mind) is free to open up to suggestions. It is then that you can naturally and easily change an old habit or create a new, empowering state.

How long does it take?

My sessions usually run anywhere from one to two hours in length. Most programs run at a minimum of three sessions, one session a week. The contents of the unconscious mind change quickly with repetition. For further reinforcement, I provide the client with a cassette tape of each session. With it, my clients have the ability to go into trance whenever and wherever the wantto make those changes happen fast!

Will I fall asleep?

No. Some clients may experience partial or full amnesia for portions of the first session. That is perfectly natural. In fact, that is usually a sign of natural aptitude for the process of hypnosis. However, experiencing amnesia is no proof of hypnosis occurring. Most people find that they recall everything during the session. That is also natural, and hypnosis is still effective for them. With time and further sessions, those people also find that they experience partial or total amnesia during the sessions. Hypnosis is really a concentration of attention, not a dulling of consciousness.

Can I be forced to do anything I dont want to during a session?

No. A client will never do anything against his or her own will. The client will only act on those suggestions that coincide with their personality and wishes.

Is Hypnosis a Magic Wand?

No, but the quickness with which it can instigate changes in personality and beliefs can sometimes seem like it.

What are the helpful side effects?

The human being has a central nervous system (brain and spinal chord), and a peripheral nervous system (limbs and organs). The peripheral nervous system is broken down into the autonomic nervous system which is then divided into sub-systemsthe sympathetic and the parasympathetic. The sympathetic nervous system is our fight-or-flight mechanism of consciousness. The parasympathetic nervous system controls our sense of relaxation and well being. Our modern world with all of its many stress inducing elements keeps our sympathetic nervous system active. Hence, many stress-related illnesses are seen in people today. Utilizing hypnosis or self-hypnosis on a daily basis greatly reduces stress. Harmful hormones such as chortisol are reduced in the system. This results in a greater of sense of well being, health, and even a reduction in fat cell storage.

Is hypnosis a natural state?

Naturally, yes. Psychologists have studied the process of daily, biological rhythms in the human being. We run on circadian rhythms24 hour daily cycles. We also run on ultradian rhythms. These ultradian rhythms are an activity-to-rest ratio. Usually every 90 to 120 minutes, the human body goes into a rest period. The cycle of rest is when we are most apt to create alpha or theta brainwaves. Basically, we daydream.

Daydreaming is important.

You may have heard that if a person does not dream during sleep, they will go mad. Likewise, daydreaming is an important aspect of our waking life. While you daydream, experiencing the ultradian period of rest, you relax and rest your body and mind for a brief healing period. With me, daydreaming is the natural tool for change and new direction.

Hypnosis is like dreaming consciously to reach your highest dreams.

The Arthritis-Hypnosis Connection

Did you know that we all have the ability to enhance self-healing, increase comfort and improve nutrition, exercise, communication and flexibility? This article explains clinical hypnosis and how it can bring relief to clients suffering from arthritis. Hypnosis is easy to learn, you can do it on your own and it empowers you to take an active role in your healthy well-being.

The subconscious mind has many jobs. It quietly and effectively regulates our bodily functions and stores all of our values, beliefs and memories. It also balances our blood pressure, heart rate and co-ordinates each step we take everyday of our life. The negative effects of arthritis extend into many areas of a clients life, as does the positive resolve and relief of hypnosis. Hypnotherapy is the simple process of accessing and directing the subconscious mind to support certain positive changes. It is the language of the mind, it access the most powerful level of awareness and down loads new applications of freedom and relief.

Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis. It causes a deterioration of the protective lining of cartilage in our joints. This deterioration occurs due to a breakdown of the chondrocytes that form cartilage. Osteoarthritis affects men and women equally. Most people over 30 years of age have some features of early osteoarthritis. The degree of limitation depends on the location of the inflammation. The major areas of concern are hips, knees and spine. The development of osteoarthritis may be related to trauma, aging or heredity.

The symptoms of stress play a big role in exacerbating the situation. Communication with family and friends plays a key role in managing stress and hypnosis makes this a lot easier. Suggestions offered to a client during a hypnosis session encourage them to share whats on their mind enabling them to offload concern and frustration, giving them more time doing things they enjoy.

It takes energy to deal with any physical or emotional burden. Hypnosis creates ideal sedation allowing for sound sleep. We all follow the path of our most dominant thoughts and if the last thoughts a client has at bedtime involve deep restful sleep, they are in a much better position to recharge their body and mind for tomorrows challenges.

For those suffering with arthritis its often difficult just keeping up with the fast pace of day-to-day life. Hypnosis helps individuals adjust to a more appropriate pace and also to release the frustrations and anxiety associated with any limitation. Clients who routinely relax with hypnosis are more centered, balanced and less affected by things they can not control.

Increasing muscle tone reduces stress to affected joints, which increases mobility and comfort. Low impact activities like swimming; walking and range of motion exercises are commonly recommended to clients with arthritis. With hypnosis its easier to integrate new regimes and to establish positive subconscious connections between healthy activity and improved mobility, comfort and freedom.

The more protection in your joints, the more comfort and mobility you create. Since the subconscious controls the multitude of our bodily function, hypnosis can direct it to increase the production of chondrocytes, which increases the growth of healthy new cartilage. Pain is often the biggest issue with arthritis. Some pain, however, is necessary; it acts as a warning system telling us that something isnt right. The responsible approach with hypnosis is to only reduce unnecessary pain, leaving intact the bodys ability to signal us and protect us from further complications.

Hypnosis can also be used to regulate the flow and distribution of endorphins, which are the feel good chemicals the body uses to create comfort and relaxation. Using hypnosis to regulate endorphin production plays a big role in putting the client in control. Hypnosis can also alter the perception of where the pain is located. By redirecting sensitivity away from key areas such as hips, knees and vertebrae to a less critical part of the anatomy like a finger tip, the client has much more control.

The same approach can be used to attach a different quality to pain. A sharp pain can be perceived as dull; burning pain can be perceived as cool. Involving other senses is one of the distinct advantages hypnosis offers in managing the symptoms of arthritis. Another technique involves using one color to represent pain and another to represent comfort, and then blending the two offering instant relief.

Lastly, by attaching a number value to pain creates the option of change. By imagining a yardstick during hypnosis a client can pick the number that best reflects their current level of pain, and then they are directed to different numbers which changes their perceived level of discomfort.

With hypnosis arthritis sufferers gain a distinct advantage in managing and even reversing the limitations of arthritis. Hypnosis is simple, empowering and extremely effective. A few sessions with a hypnotherapist gets you started and with a little practice you begin to effect healthy positive changes in your life. We all have remarkable self-healing abilities and hypnosis is an excellent way to jumpstart a return to a healthier more active life.

Self Hypnosis Cds - Whisper Subliminals

In the last article I discussed the concept of subliminal elements that can be included with self hypnosis cds. In this article, I want to describe a special type of subliminal persuasion, namely the whisper subliminal.

Duncan McColl developed the idea of whisper subliminals and I will leave it to his own words to describe how this came about.

“A whole new concept in subliminal healing evolved in 1990 in meeting an exceptional need for a cd to assist in a difficult childbirth case.

Meeting an exceptional challenge in 1992 produced another innovation in recording therapy: Whisper Subliminal.

Quite simply… the musical ’screening’ is removed and the high-speed subliminal message is recorded at low volume. In using the recording, the volume is turned down so that the whisper becomes inaudible. The subliminal message is then received and implemented by the subconscious control levels of mind to the precise degree that it is beneficial to whoever is within normal hearing range…

The whisper subliminal recording can be played at anytime, including while driving, reading or watching television. The beneficial influence is apparent immediately.” Duncan McColl

The great benefit of a Whisper Subliminal recording is that you do not have to take time out to listen to it. You can just have it playing in the background and because the sound is turned down to below audibility it does not interfere with anything else you might be doing or concentrating on. It is a truly unique concept and a great asset to the person who wants to change but finds they have no time to do so.

On many of the Self Hypnosis cds authored by Duncan there is a Whisper Subliminal track to add to the choice of the listener

The Power of Covert Hypnosis

The Power of Covert Hypnosis

Where is the greatest need for Power in your life? For most people, it is in persuading others to go along with our ideas. Whether we are trying to sell a product or service to a prospect, trying to discipline our children, trying to convince our boss to give us a raise, or trying to seduce that beautiful stranger, a greater degree of Power will help us achieve our goals much easier.

In one respect or another, we are trying to sell someone on an idea in practically every situation of our lives. If we could improve our ability to control the situation, our effectiveness as a person would go up considerably, and we would be a more powerful person.

Logic will not always win, even when logic is on our side. I’m sure you’ve been in the situation where every deciding factor was in your favor, yet the other person still would not go along with your plan. Sometimes we take this as a rejection of ourselves, the other person simply did not like us. Sometimes we feel that trust was the issue to blame, or maybe the issue was fear of some sort or another.

The human mind is a very mysterious system. There are so many factors which govern a person’s behavior, and so many variables which we are almost never aware of, that trying to predict exactly what will cause a person to accept our proposal is usually a guaranteed way to fail.

But we don’t have to predict what a person will do. We only have to influence their decision so that they are more likely to do what we want them to do, and our success rate will be better than it was before. In any complex system, a small change can sometimes have dramatic results!

In our study of the mind, we find that the subconscious mind, that part which is outside of our conscious control, is very suggestible. What’s more, the subconscious mind is also far more in control of our actions and behavior than our reasoning, conscious mind. For those of us who look for any and all means to achieve our goals, there is a hint of Power in this knowledge.

What if we could find a way to influence the subconscious mind of the person we are trying to win over to our point of view? If we could find a way to suggest to the other person’s subconscious mind that they want what we are offering, and want it with a fierce desire, then our goal of persuading them will be much easier.

Advertisers have long studied the methods of influencing the subconscious mind. You have probably heard of the experiments with subliminal messages played in movie theaters. A whole industry grew up around the concept of subliminal messages to help a person change their behavior and their habits. While the results are generally disappointing to many who have tried the products offered, the disappointment was as much to do with the general nature of the suggestions buried in the material as it was due to any other factor.

Another industry has gained much popularity in the last several years. This industry has grown up around a new technology of understanding and manipulating the mind. This technology is called NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming). NLP teaches us that most people access different areas of the mind while performing some basic physical actions that you can identify. Using this information, you can tell if a person is remembering an actual event that took place or if they are making up a story to cover up what really happened.

NLP has also been used to help people establish rapport with others in an incredibly short period of time. Rapport is important for one key reason, unless you and the person you are trying to influence are in rapport with each other, there will be very little agreement. If the other person does not feel comfortable with you, and does not feel that you are ‘like them’, at least in general ways, that person will not feel good about accepting what you have to say and acting on that information. In short, you will not get what you want from that person.

Okay, so let’s assume that you are somewhat familiar with the basic ideas of NLP. You know about mirroring the other person’s body language. You know about speaking in their terms, whether visual, auditory, or kinesthetic. You even know about the eye movements and what they refer to. This is only the surface of the incredible amount of power that a full knowledge of NLP will give you.

Some of the more advanced techniques of NLP deal with what is known as pacing and leading. The central idea here is that if you say a number of things that are obviously true, such as we are in a room with 4 walls, that we are sitting at this table talking with each other, and that you are holding a glass of wine, then whatever you say next (which is not so obvious) will seem to be more true than if you did not include the obvious facts. Guys, if your girlfriend starts to think that you don’t love her, here is your salvation. Simply say a string of obviously true statements right before you tell her you do love her. Repeat this a few times and she will start to believe you.

And this works (to one degree or another) with those you just met. You can use this if you are a salesperson trying to convince the prospect that your product is superior to your competition’s product. You can use this to convince your boss that you are worth much more than the company is paying you. And you can use this to convince that hottie that spending an evening with you will be better than anything else he/she could be doing.

This one concept from the science of NLP is priceless! And there is much more. There is a whole segment in NLP on language patterns. There are some patterns which will help you discover exactly what someone means when they say something vague and mysterious. There are language patterns which contain hidden meanings which bypass the conscious mind and go straight to the subconscious mind (our focus for this article). And there are language patterns that can induce a hypnotic state without a formal induction ritual. Talk about an open door to the subconscious mind!

There is so much information, that a brief article such as this one could not cover it all. There are numerous books out on the market which explain many of the theories of NLP. And if you’re good at translating theory into practical application, any of these books will give you greater power in dealing with other people.

If you are not so good with translating theory into practical application, then there is only 2 books that I have found which give you a word for word roadmap to gaining the cooperation of another person. Both are produced by a single company, which also produces audio recordings from which to learn the techniques in exquisite detail. One book covers many general persuasion situations. The other book is geared specifically towards intimate relationships and seduction. Click Here to find out more about both of these books and the audio recordings which supplement them.

Good luck in your persuasion activities!

Clinical Hypnosis

Clinical Hypnosis

Did you know that Americans spend as much out-of-pocket for holistic solutions such as hypnosis as they do for inpatient hospitalizations? The Eisenberg studies of 1991 and again in 1997 shocked the mainstream medical community with these findings. The authoritarian approach to western medicine assumes that health and wellness comes from others. This minimizes the importance of our own natural ability to not only enhance the healing process but to avoid illness to begin with.

If the rapid assembly line of traditional healthcare has clinicians overwhelmed, what about the emotional state of those being cared for? How are the patients coping with their situation? What expectations do they have for recovery? Do they see themselves as temporarily side tracked or powerless? Do they believe there is a role for them to play in their own recovery or do they feel totally dependant? This article describes how hypnosis works and reviews some of the clinical applications.

What is Hypnosis?

The word hypnosis is a Greek derivative for sleep coined by scientist James Braid in 1843. It was an unfortunate choice of words because hypnosis is not sleep at all. Nearly all hypnosis clients hear and remember everything during a session. Hypnosis is better described as a combination of deep physical relaxation and heightened awareness.

It is the process of bypassing conscious thought and stepping into the subconscious, which is our bodys control center and also where all of our habits, values and beliefs reside. The subconscious mind is like the hard drive of a computer, it is where all the programming is stored. Hypnosis not only helps you step inside of this powerful place, but it also empowers the client to initiate positive changes supporting improved health and thoughts of future success.

A hypnotist/hypnotherapist uses soothing music and paints peaceful verbal images enabling clients to shift from conscious to subconscious thought. Once this is accomplished they are directed with carefully phrased suggestions, affirmations and imagery supporting the desired goals. The client subconsciously integrates the information and puts it into action.

Clinical Hypnosis

Clinical hypnosis applies to medical concerns. There are dozens of applications of this holistic technique in the acute care setting and scientific research is building an impressive case supporting its effectiveness and cost saving merits. Here are some examples:

Intensive Care: Clients can block out distractions and reduce discomfort, which improves their ability to get quality rest and speed up recovery time. Clinical hypnosis reduces stress, balances blood pressure and heart rate, which minimize complications. It can also be used to reduce secretions, bleeding, improve immune response and make procedures more tolerable.

Oncology: Hypnosis lessens stress, anxiety, pain, nausea and vomiting. It reduces respiratory distress and even helps prevents hair loss. It increases confidence and self-image. Clinical hypnosis helps ease the acceptance of physical restrictions or even coping with end of life transition.

Pediatrics: What better gift to give a frightened child than control during a time of crisis. Children have active imaginations and respond very well to hypnosis. It can melt away fear; increase their relaxation and focus making it easier for them to understand and tolerate procedures and treatments.

Surgical: Clinical hypnosis can reduce anxiety, pain, stress and bleeding. It promotes rapid healing and improved immune response. These clients can better manage post-op pain and nausea. They use less medication and avoid the side effects that go with it. Those who are relaxed going into anesthesia are relaxed coming out of it. They have fewer complications and have a shorter length of stay.

Mental Health: Hypnosis relieves symptoms of despair or sadness, fears, phobias and even addictions. It puts the client in control. They get to play an active role in their own recovery, which adds to an increased sense of fulfillment ensuring long-term success.

Dentistry: Hypnosis helps minimize anticipatory anxiety, bleeding, gagging, pain, excess salivation and distorts time perception making procedure seem to go by quickly. Hypnosis can also help establish a positive association with dental care promoting routine care.

Summary

Clinical hypnosis offers clients an oasis of relaxation and control when they need it most. They have a shorter length of stay, use less medication, have fewer complications and feel like they were a part of the team. Hypnosis can blend nature and science with dramatically positive results. And clients who go on to become self-practitioners of this relaxing technique can make positive changes in many other areas of their lives as well.

Surgical Hypnosis

When people set aside the usual myths and misconceptions associated with hypnosis good things usually happen. Recently, hypnosis has been getting some positive national exposure increasing the publics general awareness of its health related benefits and its role as an increasingly popular frontline holistic healer. Hypnosis is non-invasive, soothing and once the client understands the process they may continue making healthy changes all on their own.

Hypnosis is the simple process of accessing subconscious thought. The subconscious mind has many important functions; it is where all our values, beliefs, habits and patterns reside. It also is the home of our bodys control center. It regulates our heart rate, breathing and coordinates every step we take.

Having the key to such a powerful place enables us to initiate positive changes supporting how our body responds to situations like stress, fear, pain, depression or even the trauma of surgery. Clients fortunate enough to be given the option of receiving hypnosis prior to, and after surgical procedures, sing its praises. Also, scientific research supports these claims with reduced complications and medication needs; more timely recoveries and shorter hospital stays, which is good for everyone.

An average savings of $1,200 per patient resulted from this simple 5-minute intervention. (1)

Another study discovered that the hypnosis group did better than 89% of those who did not receive hypnosis. These data strongly support the use of hypnosis with surgical patients. (2)

Hypnosis isnt magic, its nature. We all go in and out of hypnotic-like trance several times a day. We call it day dreaming or zoning out. Hypnosis is the process of enabling this dream-like state to occur and then offering helpful direction, which support the clients specific goals.

Surgical hypnosis involves relaxation, improved immune response and circulation that minimizes infection and promotes rapid healing. By increasing endorphin production pain is minimized requiring less medication and the unwanted side effects that usually result. And because the imagination resides in subconscious thought, wonderful images show the client relaxed, comfortable and successful further reinforcing this positive plan.

This healthy direction creates a blueprint, which becomes reality. Surgical Hypnosis disconnects patterns of fear and worry. It puts the client in the drivers seat when need they need it most. In life we all follow the path of our most dominant thoughts and with hypnosis you get the unique opportunity to create the thoughts and images, which serve you best. What your mind conceives your body achieves.

In the mid 1840s when John Elliotson and James Esdaile began using hypnosis in the surgical setting as an anesthetic with great success. Prior to their efforts mortality rate was 40%; with hypnosis it was 5%. In spite of their success hypnosis would soon take a backseat to either, nitrous oxide and chloroform by the late 1840s. (3)

The 3 important keys to success with hypnosis are how open a client is to this type of relaxation, how motivated they are to make positive changes and how prepared the hypnotist is to offer the suggestions and imagery supporting the desired change. Hypnosis is a relationship of trust and co-operation. If a client believes the hypnotist is working in their best interest they are likely to be more open minded and accepting, ensuring positive results.

It is impossible to predict the outcome of any treatment option but when clients understand the technique, benefits and are involved with the process, results are consistently positive. Also, considering the mountain of research supporting clinical hypnosis as an effective compliment to traditional medicine, the time has come to open the door to this and other holistic options.

An advocate and practitioner of surgical hypnosis is Elvira Lang MD. Dr. Lang teaches at Harvard University and is the Director of Interventional Radiology at Beth Israel Deaconess in Boston, MA. Her study involved 241 patients receiving percutaneous vascular and renal procedures either received no special treatment, structured attention or self-hypnotic relaxation. Structured attention and self-hypnotic relaxation proved beneficial during invasive medical procedures. Hypnosis had more profound effects on pain and anxiety reduction, and is superior, in that it also improves hemodynamic stability. (4)

Other studies reveal more positive results:

Positive intraoperative suggestions seem to have a significant effect in reducing morphine requirements in the early postoperative period. (5)

Patients in the hypnosis group had significantly less vomiting, 39% compared to 68% in the control group, less nausea and less need of analgesics postoperatively. Preoperative hypnotic techniques in breast surgery contribute to a reduction of both post operative nausea and vomiting and postoperative analgesic requirements. (6)

Anxiety before the operation increased significantly in the control group but remained at baseline level in the experimental (hypnosis) group. Postoperative consumption of analgesics was significantly reduced in the experimental (hypnosis) group compared to the control (non-hypnosis) group. (7)

A significant correlation was found between anxiety and perceived knowledge of procedures. The results suggest that pre-operative hypnosis provides a quick and effective way to reduce pre-operative patient anxiety and anesthetic requirements for gynecological daycare surgery. (8)

Through the early 20th century the debate was if hypnosis existed at all. The American Medical Association said it did in 1958 and since then hypnosis has been dissected and analyzed and the positive results are available for anyone to read.

Now the debate is over and the verdict is in. It may not be for everyone, but what is? Hypnosis is safe, relaxing and an effective option for clients going through the trauma of surgery. There are no side effects or allergic reactions and it costs next to nothing. Some also believe that it should be the clients right, not the hospitals option, as to which holistic supports are available. Someday soon it will hopefully be as simple as selecting hypnosis on a pre-op check list.

Fear and Anxiety: They Are No Match For Hypnosis

Many people struggle each day with fear and anxiety. Were not talking about being afraid that you didnt pass your last test or anxiety over a job interview. Anxiety and fear become deep rooted elements of a persons life and can create havoc in relationships and make it impossible to function on a day to day basis.

Anxiety often creates a snowball effect of emotions that take place when something, even the smallest thing, goes wrong in a persons life. For example, for someone struggling with anxiety, even the minutest intrusion can throw his or her entire day out of line.

Lets say you are getting ready for work and your cat throws up on your carpet. Automatically your mind starts racing. This means you are going to be late for work, which means your boss is going to think you are irresponsible, which means you are never going to get the raise you need to buy your first home which means you are going to be stuck in an apartment forever and your whole financial life is ruined. In an instant cat vomit is equated to a destroyed life for someone dealing with anxiety.

Fear Is Often Related To Anxiety.

Individuals often become afraid of things that have led them to anxiety in the past. The individual in the above example may never look at cats the same way again. Fear leads to the avoidance of things that people fear and can create havoc in their lives such as the example given above. People may become phobic of snakes, spiders, clowns, chickens and many other things.

A New Approach

Perhaps you are someone struggling with fear and anxiety. You may have tried different methods including counseling and anti-anxiety medications to make it go away but nothing has worked. You may have spent hours in the self-help section of your local bookstore with no luck.

You still have one more option available to try and that is hypnosis. No, hypnosis does not mean that you are put into a trance by a freaky man with a pocket watch. The problem with basic therapy is that it simply uses the conscious portion of your brain. The conscious part is the portion that controls and assists you with day-to-day thought processes.

The purpose of hypnotism is to relax the conscious level of the brain and subdue it so that the subconscious portion is allowed to come forward. What is the subconscious? The subconscious mind is that portion of your brain that takes care of your automatic day-to-day business such as riding a bicycle. You have done it so many times that conscious though is no longer required for these tasks.

Once the subconscious is accessible to the hypnotist, he or she will work with you to rewire your subconscious. For example, if you are afraid of spiders, a hypnotist can help you relate spiders to something light and funny instead of something to be afraid of. Over time, you will learn that you are significantly bigger than your fears and can overcome them all through hypnotherapy!

Hypnosis For Students: New Study Aid Or Unfair Advantage?

Author: Wendy N. Lapidus-Saltz

Ask most college students if they have experienced hypnosis, and they’ll tell you about a hypnosis show they saw in high school or college. It was funny, and intriguing, but they haven’t thought about it since.

Yet hypnosis can give students far more than entertainment. Some know this personally. They’re just not saying much about it.

In fact, you may be surprised to learn that among top students who want to get the most from their studies, many have recognized hypnosis as one of the most effective secondary study aids available. If you have students in your own household, hypnosis can do more for their success than you or they might have expected.

Hypnosis can:

- Double, triple, or even quadruple understanding and retention of subject matter
- Make studying faster and easier
- Dial down anxiousness during exams, and while studying, supercharging their success
- Enhance test-taking skills, essay writing, attention span, and much more
- Increase confidence in delivering oral reports or speeches and defending theses
- Help develop leadership potential
- Improve athletic ability
- Boost confidence in most areas of student life, including social aspects
- Increase desire to further one’s education and career aspirations
- Decrease self doubt and improve future outlook
- And these are just the beginning. Because once a student is familiar and comfortable with hypnosis, he or she will naturally think up new ways it can help.

(In fact, we are discovering new possibilities all the time.)

Does any of this sound like something you, or the student in your life, could use? Please realize the above list is not exhaustive; there are likely more areas amenable to the assistance of hypnosis that I have neglected to include.

As you read on, and think of others you’d like to suggest, or inquire about, and feel free to write me; contact information can be found in the author box.

Here is more about how hypnosis can impact education at almost any age:

- Self Hypnosis for High School, College, and Grad Students

I was certified in hypnosis more than 10 years ago, but it was only when I co-taught a creativity class with a colleague at a college that I discovered what hypnosis can do for higher-education.

On that day, upon my co-lecturer’s urging, I hypnotized everyone in the class who chose the experience, for improved performance in studies, and greater ease in test taking.

Although the hypnosis itself was the real excitement that day, later conversations with students revealed that they were experiencing less stress, better memory of their subject matter, and a greater sense of well being.

After that, although I no longer taught regularly, I started coming in once a semester to talk about and deliver hypnosis to those interested. The instructor tells me it is the most highly-anticipated and best-attended class session every semester.

- Self Hypnosis for Ongoing Support As Needed

You may be interested to know that a student over 12, all the way up to graduate school and beyond, can also be taught to hypnotize him or herself on a regular or as-needed basis any time a need arises.

Naturally, if self-hypnosis is used to study more efficiently or develop better recall, it’s easy to see the power it and bring to any student’s education.

But even a brief, generic self-hypnosis session can have health benefits and an ongoing influence on self trust and emotional balance.

And any student who is seeing a mental-health professional can empower his therapy himself: if he will simply capture the positive self-talk his counselor recommends and use it in his next self-hypnosis session.

- Hypnosis as New Tool For Education

In my private practice, more parents are understanding the value of hypnosis in education, and marveling at what self-hypnosis can do for their college student.

As one parent said, “Do you know what it used to be like in this house the night before a final? Now, the night before the test, she hypnotizes herself for ten minutes and she’s asleep the minute her head hits the pillow, and she doesn’t wake up till morning.”

The result: a clearer mind and more confidence the next day.

Do students also recognize the possibilities? It’s my experience as a practitioner that when students are simply directed toward the information-like this article and others about hypnosis-they quickly develop interest in the subject as it is inherently interesting to young people.

As a parent, it is important not to force it on them, however, or to connect it with current poor performance. Rather, it should be strictly voluntary and offered as a possibility, useful and fun.

Frankly, a student who learns self hypnosis goes beyond improving poor performance. She is a step ahead in taking responsibility for her performance, her future, and her ability to achieve precisely what she desires.

How relaxing for the parent to let go of worry, force, and nagging, and watch his child take her future into her own hands-and succeed!

It is my experience, incidentally, that the best students are the ones most eager to learn self-hypnosis because they want to take their abilities even further, and do so without added stress.

- Hypnosis for Those Returning To School Years Later

After graduation-whether high school or college-many adults thought they had seen the end of classrooms and papers. But many find themselves returning to school years later, whether for a graduate or post-graduate degree, or a certificate program needed for their field.

If you are among them, do find yourself feeling unsure about your study skills? Or intimidated by younger classmates with better memories or simply more time to study?

Hypnosis can help with all of that, including the confidence that you’ll want to supercharge your progress.

- Finally, the Question Of Unfairness

Until now, I have been begging the question this article poses: Is the use of hypnosis in education an unfair advantage for the students using it?

Well, let’s consider that:

Is getting a tutor’s help unfair because not everyone is willing or able to do the same?

What about a coach helping your child, after school and on your dime, in her athletic pursuits?

Are prep courses unfair-for SATs, GREs, GMATs, etc.?

Or getting extra help from an instructor after class?

Is participating in a study group unfair? What if it’s run by a professional?

And how about simply choosing to join with the smartest group of people studying for a particular exam?

I would argue that hypnosis to empower education is both practically and morally akin to these others.

Yes, hypnosis is acutely effective at focusing the abilities of the subconscious mind on the subject matter, maximizing every moment of study time, and often producing greater, longer-lasting results. But the intention of creating an advantage via time, effort, and money is equivalent to that of prep courses and tutorials.

When you give your child (or yourself) an advantage that will improve her abilities, her standing, and ultimately benefit the lives of those who will reap the advantages of contact with her, is there is real reason to feel guilty? ©2008 by Wendy Lapidus-Saltz. All rights reserved.
